Although most of our grant-making in Scotland is guided by our interests in our four key themes (Health and Social Causes, Youth Opportunities, Scottish Culture and Heritage, and the Natural and Built Environment) we also make occasional grants in support of other initiatives.

We are proactive in identifying strategic grant opportunities, either through our own research or in response to ideas that emerge from networks like the Scotland Funders Forum. We choose to make grants like this when they present opportunities for one or more of the following:

  • achieving wider reach or impact than would be likely through our core grant-making under our four themes;
  • helping us learn, especially on issues of relevance across our grant-making, such as climate or human rights;
  • forging partnerships – reflecting opportunities for more joined-up work between funders, for example.
